Question Tire size help

I am looking to buy a set of BF Goodrich All Terrains but I am what you would call a novice when it comes to tires. My stock wheels are 265/70/r17.

Does this mean my new wheels also have to be 265 width? Or can i go to something bigger like a 285 and still keep the stock rims?

I am looking at either 285/70/r17 or 305/70/r17.

Thanks for the help.

yea no problem- wha you need to pay attention to is the overall diameter and width- in the two sizes you are interested, the 285/70/17 is a 32.8" x11.5" wide tire should fit perfectly.
the 305/65/17 is a 32.7"x12.5" which should also fit perfectly

just got to work through all the stats, and read the data for the tire...
heres a link to bfg's at ko specs:
