Continental Contitracs - Good or bad?
Continental Contitracs - Good or bad?
Hey guys,
I have an '01 Expy with the 4.6. The truck has a set of Continental Contitracs, 265 70 17's, on it. While driving at 65 - 70 mph, the truck shake real bad. Feels like it's going to come apart. I always get my wheels balanced at each oil change so I don't think this is the problem. So, the other day, I take it to the dealer. I explain the issue to the service advisor. He suggests a 'road-force' balance on the tires. I agreed. Well, I get a call from him later in the day and he tells me that the tech could only get 1 of the 4 tires to balance out on the road force balance. He went on to say that the other 3 were way out of spec. He also said that he believes that Continental tires are not the greatest and that he's encountered many issues with them.
My question to you guys is: is this really possible? I probably have about 10K miles of tread left on the tires so I'd hate to get rid of them prematurely. If I do get rid of them, what type of tire should I purchase?
Any thoughts are welcome.
Thanks,
Anthony

I'm Continental's biggest fan. Continentals are the ONLY tires I use for a CAR. In fact, I took the Bridgestones off my Wife's new GTI with only 250 miles on them to mount Continental Extreme Contact. I used to autocross with off the shelf Continental Contacts. I took the GY Eagle RSA's off the Wife's 2000 Cavalier just to mount Continentals. They only reason I didn't put them on her 2003 Jetta was the car was leased & we didn't want to mess with it. Further, I just put a set of Continental Road Attack on my 2000 Honda VFR800fi & can't believe how much better they are than the Dunlops that were on it before.
Their TRUCK tires??? Total junk. I got a set of Contitrac's from www.tirerack.com a number of years ago for my 1991 Chevy Truck. They were on sale $160 for a set of 4. Since I liked Continental on cars so I figured why not? This was my first & ONLY set of Continental TRUCK tires. They were the worst set of TRUCK tires I've ever driven on. Quite surprising to me since their CAR tires kick ***.
If you need CAR tires, you can't go wrong with Continental. Since you need TRUCK tires & they make the Bridgestone AT REVO in your size, look no further.

I called TIRERACK & they said they are the SINGLE BEST all season truck tire money can buy. Even though they don't make them in my size, I'm gonna go from the 2WD size 265/60/18 up to the 4WD size 275/65/18 just so I can use the REVO. AAANNNDDD, they're about $40 each more exspensive than the next comparable tire. I'm willing to pay the difference for quality.

I hate to mention this
Ford and continential had a recall on contitrac tires on ford trucks
My employer had ford recall 5 of our f350's because of tire problems similiar to what you describe
all of our agencies' f150's have hankook tires, not the best, we are now replacing
on the 35 ford's that our family special ordered this year were spec'd with Michelin tires and the trucks that came in with something else were rejected due to vibration issues

There have been lots of issues with the Continentals on trucks as stated above. The weird thing is I have over 31,000 miles on my 05 with those tires on it. They have never been rebalanced and are still smooth as can be. I have them rotated every oil change, 3500 to 3800 miles, but no balancing. I plan on about 3000 more or so and I will buy some Michelins.
