1994 Shaking While Braking
1994 Shaking While Braking
For the past couple years my 94 F-250 shakes when braking and is getting worse. Its not the traditional warped rotor pulsing that can be felt through the brake pedal. I have experienced warped rotors on countless other vehicles and I could always feel it in the brake pedal. Truck has 75k and one rotor was replaced at 40k (cracked) and the other at 60k (scored).
When braking lightly its OK but as soon as moderate pressure is applied the whole cab starts to shake. If I brake really hard it will shake for a couple seconds and stop.
I have searched old posts and have found folks with similar symptoms but nothing in the threads directly pointed to a specific cause with any certainty. Some said its the rotors but this would be a new symptom to me since it "can't" be felt in the pedal. I'd just put rotors on but hate to throw parts at a problem unless I have at least some logical rationale.
The front end is tight, bearings are tight, new shocks, and no obvious slop in the spring bushings.
Any help is appreciated.

I had a similar problem to that once with a Chevy work van I used to drive. It ended up being sloppy tie rod ends, but you could feel the slop in the steering at other times as well, and the problem wasn't all the time. Seemed sorta' intermittent.
I would still have to put my mney on it being the rotors. If you don't want to spend the money on all new rotors, just take them in to a machine shop that turns rotors and have them checked to see if they are warped. You could allways tell them not to turn the rotors unless they were really bad. But then again, if you've already taken them off the truck you might as well have them turned and replace the pads. Just my opinion. --DIYM

Commonly front warped rotors will cause steering/pedal shake, warped rear drums/rotors will cause pedal shake, and if it is excessive, lots of cab shaking.
You might have rear warped drums. Check them by pressing the brake pedal (on a safe road) and make sure the release cable is pulled.

I too think something is warped again. On my old chev the dashboard would shake as well as the pedal and steering. It doesnt pull to one side or the other? Havent expeirenced rear drum warpage but seems plausible to me.
I had a problem similar to this when my lug nuts were not torqued properly after getting new tires installed. I took the truck to a trusted mechanic to get the front end aligned soon afterward and the problem went away within 1000 miles.
You might want to check the torque on all your lug nuts to be sure they are the same.

If it's not the rotor thats warped, maybe the pads are kaput. Mine did something like this when the pads needed replacing, kinda sounded like I put it in 4x4 at a higher speed. Maybe the back brakes too.
Warped rotors rarely the problem, if ever
Check out this link http://www.stoptech.com/tech_info/wp...rakedisk.shtml - ever since I started bedding my new pads per this article, I have never had any brake pulsing, etc. again. Just smooth consistent stopping. I have used this method for the last four or five brake jobs on three different vehicles that had the typical "warped rotor" problem repeatedly.
