PSI Question
PSI Question
Ok I just bought new tires for my 02 Screw 4X4 (Buchshots). I got 285/70/17's. Now I know these are wider than the 265's. I put them on stock rims 17X7.5 for now. Put about 500 miles on them. I have noticed the little hair things that they put on them. The ones in the center have been worn but the ones on the outer lugs both sides don't look near as worn. I know this is because I need wider rims and I will have them one day these tires were cheap and I need replacments fast.
To the question. I know if you don't run proper PSI for a tire it can hurt gas mileage. Do you think it would hurt it to bad if I took 5 PSI out of each tire so they wear even?
I know why they are wearing like they are and understand rim width etc just trying not to kill MPG for tire wear when they will be replaced in probably 6 months. (plan on selling them so I don't want tires with uneven wear either.)

Ok. First Of All Yes, You Do Need 17x10's To Run 285's. Now, Your Tires Should Be Rated @ 65psi Which Is Way To Much. With An F-150 You Should Be Running 35-40 Max. Your Gas Mileage Will Not Be Affected That Much. However, You Can Run As Much As 40-45psi If You Use Nitrogen In Your Tires. Nitrogen Has No Moisture So It Will Not Expand When Your Tires Heat Up. 65psi Just Means, That's The Max Pressure For That Tire. If You Drop 10-15psi, You Will Not Effect Your Mileage At All. My Tires Are Rated At 65psi, And I Run 40psi With Nitro. I Have The 4.6 With Dual 40 Series Flowmasters, K&n Cold Air And Superchip Power Programmer @ Full Pro. And I Still Get 18mpg City.
yeah I think I am gonna drop the PSI to get the tire running right now bowed in the middle. I am gonna do it and just see what happens unless anyone has a reason not too.
I know I need wider rims but I am gonne be runnning 17X9 DC-1's with some 33X12.5/17's later but right now I just got these as temp tires because I am driving a lot using my truck for work so I am not worried about the tires but I want them to wear right..
