Preperation for painting clear coated wheels ???

I have a new Super Crew, with the 20" wheel option.
I want to paint everything but the 6 spokes, to body color,
but don't have any ideas how to get the paint to stick.
Should I use a scotch brite and scuff em up?,
Should I use an acid etching primer to adhere thru the clear coat?

I need ideas from someone who has done it

NO ETCH PRIMER!!!!! That's for bare metal substrates only. Scotch brite is good, preferably gray. Personally, I like to use 600-800 grit wet/dry , then finish with a gray scotchbrite that is wet. This is more than enough scratch for adhesion. You can apply a sealer if you'd like first, as this will help the coverage of the new color. What color are you painting them? Good Luck! Ron

Ok.. then sealer would be recommended, just as an insurance policy against sand scratches showing up... I'd love to see pix when it's done! Ron

by the way, I paint for a living at a BMW/Land rover dealership
