parking brake
Hi,
My parking brake is not very good. When I got my brakes done last year the mechanic told me that my parking brake was all jammed and really questioned the quality of the ford parking brake system.
Is there any after market parts of better quality so I can rebuild the whole system

This is a very common problem mostly due to lack of use. Mine had seized as well, and last summer last summer I got them stuck on when trying them at home. I got them unstuck by vigouressly shaking the e-brake cable and finaly they released.
My Inspection is due at the end of the month, so last saturday I pulled off my drivers side rear drum/rotor and both e-brake shoes fell to the ground. after beating and pounding for about an hour on the passenger side rear drum/rotor, I finally got it off. the adjusters were all seized up on both sides, shoes were shot on drivers side and e-brake cable was seized on passenger side. It cost me $43 CDN for the shoes, and about 4 hours of my time. well maybe 5 hrs. I didn't think it was gonna take me that long. anyway, all is OK now, and I'm gonna try to remember to use them every now and then. I was also a little liberal with the anti-seize upon reassembly.
Things I did on the job:
- Grind down the lip that had formed on the drum part of the rotor.
- knock all loose material off of the rotor
- lubbed the backplate/shoe contact points
- lubbed the lever mechanisme very well
- got the adjusters "unseized" and also well lubbed
- cleaned and lubbed all the rest of the disk brake mechanisme since it was off anyway
- have beer
- pat myself on the back for saving myself a few hundred $
- have another beer

Hey guys, funny this popped up, I'm doing mine.....again! Now, ya, they are good if they're used often, then inspected to see if they release proper. That little rubber grommet thing that the lever pokes out through is often worn allowing water in. Then the lever seizes and won't pivot anymore. Alot of antisieze helps, but never totally solves this. It has become a yearly maintenance thing with me. I need them sometimes but don't use them all the time. Invest in the hardware kit, about 24 bucks canadian, and if need be, antiseize the threads on your adjusters if not replace em, about 60 bucks for both. 60 dollars for the adjusters seem a little steep anybody? I just ordered them in for tomorrow so we'll see if first they are the right ones. Don't need to buy the e brake arm that siezes, they aren't available unless you buy the entire backing plate assembly, b.s. and that is about 200 a side.
All this rambling on and I forgot to mention that mine is disc rear! Good luck, and it's not hard. Be patient with the shoes retaining clips. They require patients, finesse and fingers that can stand pressure. You'll see.

This must be the week of stuck E-Brakes... count me in too
02 F-150
I used the E-brake today, and it's stuck now!
I guess I have my work cut out for me tomorrow and take the rear tires off and see if I can free up the E-brake. this sucks, if it's not one thing, its another

Ya, got that right. Just as you smack your hands together after fixing something, you notice something else. We're too **** I guess. But for your truck, just put a screwdriver (large flat end) and kinda beat them back towards the rear of the truck. Usually they don't need much to be released even when siezed.
thanks

BTW, I should have stated that Mine are also rear disk brakes. As of this morning, the e-brakes are still working fine. I'll keep using them every day till inspection next week, then I'll probably forget about them till next year when I'll have to go through this all over again.:o

I used my e-brake for the first time yesterday, since I've had my truck (2000 model bought brand new). It worked fine. I can't think of any reason why I'd need to use my e-brake, but I guess I better start finding a reason, huh. How about this; I need to use my e-brake so I can drink beer (lol, any reason for a cold beer is good enuff for me).
BTW, I was looking at this thread, cuz my brother has an 02 model, and says his e-brake is messed up, just thought I'd get some ideas for him. I hope I can drink a beer while I watch him fix his e-brake. HAHAHAHAHA!!!!

Laugh at him when he can't get those clips back on, or they slip and fire into his forehead. Oh well, happy days are here again, finished installing all new hardware, and they work 100 percent again. More crap off my mind. Now, back to the whistle noise underhood?????
