2001 SCEW 2WD: 18s, 20s or 22s?

Time for new shoes and I want to improve the look of my 2001 SCREW 2WD.

I read ton's of posts about tires for 4WDs but have yet to find good threads on how dress up 2000-2003 2WDs.

I am currently runing P255/70R16s on the standard XLT 16" chrome rims. I just drive the truck on the highway so I do not need an off-road tire and I tow a boat over big hills so I do not want to increase tire size and lower my gears.

What are the popular solutions for dressing up 2001-2003 2WDs?

My guess is the 22s are out because I would increase tire diam. too much to keep a good ride.

I could go with Lightning or other 18s?

Are the 20's popular and look good on 2WDs? Any galleries I should go review?

Thanks,
Willsurf

You can't loose with 22's! I think they are the best compromise between looks, ride, handling and price.

22's definitely look great, but as far as cost I went with 20's. I also wanted a little more tire.

I vote 18's or 20's, I like 18's best. They both seem to fit really nice and look proportional.

Anything bigger (22's) are just to big and flashy for my taste.

Hey wandell,

You clearly are the voice of authority around here.

I figure 22s would look the coolest but I would also have to change from my 3.73s to 4.10s if I have enough sidewall on the 22s to use as a rough and tumble daily driver and also not disrupt my current towing gear ratio. On 20's 275/45R20 would be closest to stock.

It seems like it would take a 285/35 R22 to match my current tire height. Those sidewalls seem too thin for a daily driver. And I am expecting 22s & tires to be more expensive than 20s & tires. What am I missing?

Thanks much,
Willsurf

Hey Bartak1,

Thanks for the reply. I was considering 18" lightning wheels but stopped when I read all the posts here about people having trouble finding decent prices for tires on 18s. If the tires and wheels are the same price when bundled then I will take 20s over 18s.

+1 on the lightning rims, heres a link for them cheap. maybe that will help offset the price for the tires.

I had the L wheels on om 01 2wd s'crew and now I have a pair of eqquss 18" chrome. here is some pics. PS. the L wheels will hit if you don't change the stearing stops.

go to the mods gallery for a pic of the rims. I have cooper discoverer ht/plus in a 285/65R18 and they are about a 1/2-1" over stock but look good. the rims are 18x8.5 and no rubbing issues at all.

I'd go with a taller tire if you choose 22's. A 305/40-22 is approximatley 32 inches tall. That should be a good compromise.
