12 vs. 14

Sorry for asking a question that has already been answered - if you know where just tell me where.

I have a 99 F150. The lug nuts are 12MM. The wheels say 14MM. The previous owner was a fire sprinkler company with several trucks and I suspect that they may have put the wrong wheels on the truck.

How do I tell which wheel I should have?

I have seen references that said 99 F150's are all 12MM. But I have also seen much confusion. Two junkyards mentioned the difference but did no know how to tell. One said the book said that the wheels would swap, but not to do it. At one Ford dealer, neither Parts nor Service understood the question. At another, Service sent me to Tires, who sent me to Parts. Parts printed out the part number for the correct wheel for me, but at over $1100 for a set of steel wheel, I decided to go back to the junkyard. (They had the part number, but no other info on the wheel.)

Pep Boys assistant service manager said they had problems getting the brake rotors with the right size lug bolt.

I'm off to the junkyard to see if they have the part number the dealer gave me.

The 14mm stamped on the wheel is NOT the size of the lug nut.

Go by the style/year of the rim.

Addititonal info

On the wheels, below 14mm it says "Inset". This may be our cue that this refers to something we are not thinking about. So Johngs may be right, look at style and year.

The part number the dealer qouted was F65Z 1007 EBCP.

The junk yard has 4 wheels and they all have different part numbers. Unless someone thinks it is a bad idea, I'll probably get the one that the part number matches what is on the truck now. I am still concerned that the previous owner may have put on the wrong wheels for my truck.

I'm not sure what you are trying to do. Is there something wrong with the wheels on your truck? Do you just want a different style? All of the 97-03 F-150 wheels are interchangable. All you have to do is use lugnuts for YOUR year model truck.

Objective

Wandell,

I bought a used truck. It had been owned by a company with several trucks. I suspect they may have put the wrong wheels on my truck. I am trying to find out what original Ford wheels should be on the truck.

There is something called "inset". I have no idea what it is. One junkyard's "book" said that the 12MM would swap with the 14MM, but not to do it. I have 14MM inset wheels, but don't know how to tell if they are the correct wheels or why the junkyard's book said not to swap them.

There are also 12 and 14MM lug bolts - I am talking about inset - whatever that is - not lug bolts - I have 12 X 1.75 lugs.

I suspect that 97 - 99 2 wheel drive had 12MM, that 2000 - 2003 had 14MM and that 97 - 2003 4 X 4 had 14MM. But that is just a guess.

Thanks for your concern,
Bobby
