Question Another "What size tire..." thread. Sorry:(

Hey all,

All right, I'm a total noob when it comes to this stuff, so I would appreciate all of your experience and insight in helping me pick the right size tire for my truck. I have a 03 F-150 FX4 with stock 17 inch tires (265/70/17) and stock rims. The truck is otherwise stock as far as the wheels/suspension go. Can you all recommend me an awesome looking setup? Just FYI, I like the look of wider/bigger tires, but just don't want to rub (at least not a whole lot).

Thanks a bunch!

Ryan

I would install a 2.5" leveling kit and put on some 285/70/17's. Or if you plan to go aftermarket, 16x8's with 285/75/16.

Forgive me for my ignorance, but what is a leveling kit and what does it do (and for that matter, are they expensive?). THX.

Leveling Kit

A leveling kit levels out your truck from the front end (Lifts it anywhere from 2 inches to 2.5 inches depending on what setup you get). As you look from the side after having a kit installed, your truck is even (level) as opposed to the stock setup (front end a little lower than the back end). I have an 04 Supercrew 4X4 with a Daystar 2.5" leveling kit that cost about $130, then installation. It greatly improves the look of your truck. I'm not too sure about the '03 setup, but you may be able to get the torsion bars tweaked.

Leveling kit not necessary (I'm not sure if even exists) for -03 trucks. If the truck isn't level, adjust the front torsion bar. If you don't know how, search!

285/70R17 IMHO looks best on stock 4wd's. My pics. 35's look great w/ 3" body lifts. 35"s fit w/ little to no rub on stock wheels, but IMHO they look stuffed. There is not a whole lot in between. I think there are 2-3 tires of 295/70 and 305/70.

I'd start browsing the galleries because there are plenty of people who have all the availible tire sizes.

Is your truck lifted any. If not do you have any problems with the tires rubbing at all?

There is no leveling kit for the pre-04 F150s. If you want to level the truck out, just crank the torsion bars and get the truck aligned.

As said, 285's are a good fit.

I agree. However, personally I would go with a 16x10 inch wheel with 285/75-16's (33x11.50) or 305/70-16's (33x12.50). You will have to trim a little bit of plastic off the lower corner of the front bumpers valance to fit this combo. I have some pics in my gallary.
