Tire help for 04 F150 SCrew

Stock Continentals wore out after 20k and need some new tires. Anybody know the possible sizes that I can put on an 04 F150 Screw XLT (2WD) w/ the stock 17" rims??? Looking to upsize on the current 255/65/17. Also, any suggestions on a good tire to purchase (I really liked the looks of BFG A/T's on my old truck, but Ford dealership advised me that they don't make them in a size for my current wheel size)? Thanks!

I'd go with 265/70-17 BFG AT KO's. I don't know why the dealer told you that. Maybe he meant they were not available in your OEM size.

Yeah, he didn't really seem to know what he was talking about. I told him that I was interested in 265's, but I think he was looking for 265/65/17, therefore nobody had BFG's in stock in the area. I wasn't sure if maybe it was dealer policy that they had to install a certain size according to what the stock tire/wheel is or something.......I'm not too keen on how to match tire sizes w/ rim sizes. But thank you for the info, I'm glad to hear that I will be able to slap the BFG's on there cuz I really dig the way they look. For future info, is there any general rule of thumb when matching tires to rims(aside from wheel well clearance), as far as the diameter and width of the rim goes???

The best rule is to go to the tire manufacturers website and see what they recommend. Try to stay close to that. I have my BFG's on 10 inch wide wheels but BFG recommends a max of an 9 inch wide wheels. So far, no problems in 42,000 miles.

I too have a 4x2 screw, but my Conti's lasted 40k. I found this site somehow ( I don't remember where right now)

1010tires.com

It has a great tire size comparison feature. Since the standard 255/65/17 size offers few choices it was a great tool.

The 275/60/17 is within .2% of the stock height and .75 of an inch wider so I looked there on tirerack.com.

Lots of good choices in that size. I went to a Firestone dealer and asked if they matched prices and he said no problem. I was suprised to find the Firehawk Indy 500 tire rated so highly in all catagories. About 420.00 Out the door and so far (about 1000 miles) they're head and shoulders above the Contis, Smooth and handle great and look great with the blackwall facing out.

Just my 2 cents. By the way the REVO is now available in the stock 255/65/17 size.

Good luck.

I appreciate all of your help, thanks alot. I do have one more question. I went and checked out another local dealer, and they told me that they could fit 285/70/17's on my truck (04 stock Screw 4x2). Does this sound right, and does anybody have any pics of something similar to that? I want to fill the wheel wells out quite a bit more than the stock 255/65/17's that I currently have, but I also don't want them to be too big. Thanks again for the advice!

They would probably fit if you used the OEM wheels. I think the wheelwells would look too stuffed unless you lifted the front with a leveling kit.
