wheel question

will a 17x9 wheel with 5 inches of backspacing stick out farther than a 17x8 wheel with 4 1\8 inches? i have a 2005 4x4 screw with a 2 1\2 inch leveling kit and have 17x8 robby gordon wheels on order. what is the biggest tire i can put on. i have seen the daystar ad , that truck has 18x9's with 5 inches of backspacing with 35 inch tires. is going with a 315-70 -17 a dumb idea.

The 17x9 will stick out a little further (only about 1/8 inch) than the 17x8. I think a 315/70-17 (35x12.50) will be pushing it on either wheel with only a leveling kit. Keep in mind the people running 35's are using the OEM 7.5 inch wide wheels which have 5 1/2 inches of backspacing. I'd go with a 33 inch tire personally.

I went with a 33X12.50X17 tire on a 17X9 5.5" b.s. wheel with a 2" level and have no problems whatsoever. I think the 315's might rub a little with the setup you described. Plus, once you go to a 35" tire, you may need to consider re-gearing. I didn't want to do that.
