99 f150 - wheels.tires

i've looked through all posts in this section, and got a lot of info. guess i'll ask anyway, so it will be specific about my truck. just got my truck a while back and this is the first full size truck i've had, so i'm pretty new to this stuff, always dealing with small rangers before.

my truck is a 1999 ford f150 4x4 supercab. currently rides on 265/70r/17. from what i've read, my stock wheels are 17x7.5.
my buddy just finished putting a 3" body lift on it. now i'm looking to get bigger tires.
two tires i'm looking at are:
33/12.5/17 pro comp mud terrain (probably going with these)
285/70r/17 bf goodrich mud terrain (only size avail on 17)

i would go bigger, but don't really know if they'd fit, or if i want the 35" size. kind of sucks that there are no tire shops anywhere close that keep sizes like these in stock so i can get a good look at them.

alright. first question even though i probably know the answer. do i need wider wheels? and if so, what width would be recommended? I have no idea what width or how to figure what width works.

also, don't really understand the offset stuff. any info would help. if i'm looking to buy different wheels, what do i need to look for?
is there somewhere listed in my truck, or truck manual, that i can get the exact info, so when i do look for wheels, i know exactly what numbers to spout off, examples being offset, bolt pattern, all that stuff.

thanks for being patient with this newbie.

Ok, if you want to keep your stock wheels, I would not suggest going wider than the 285/70R17s.

If you want a wider tire, then you're going to need wider wheels. 17x9's for example. Keep in mind that depending on what tire size you go with, what fits your truck on the stock wheels might not fit when you mount them on a wider wheel, or they may require some trimming of the valence.

I dont recall the offset on the 17" wheels (I want to say 4 5/8" but Im not entirely sure), but in any case, here is some info on offset:

If you are going with aftermarket wheels, I'd go with a 17x9 or 17x10 with the 33x12.50's. The 33's will work with the stock wheels also.

But can you or anyone else answer the same question he also asked that I have as well? Can run the 35"? I have been running BFG 305 AT KO on 16x10 rims for a few years now and want to replace the tire with a taller one. I have the same exact truck as he and also the 3" body lift. I think the 305 looks small on the truck. Just a little though. Up close standing next to the truck its fine. But at 20' I don't like it. I want to be sure that no trouble comes from ice build up and an off road compress. Although I do very very little off-road as I'm big time into off road motor cycles instead.

Yes, 35's will fit on a 4x4 with a body lift.

i hadnt cranked the t bars and brakes still work fine, they really arent that much bigger when it really comes down to it, so you probly wont notice much of a difference other than the enhanced look.

Thanks Hawg Man....I am guessing I am not the 1st one to do this on a stock 1997 F150...I just wanted to make sure there are no other problems...

Here are my choices for the 285's

BFGR tako's
Bridgestone Dueler AT Revos

Just yesterday I noticed that the Revo is availible in 285/70R17 and is only 43 pounds. I had 265/70R17 Revos on my last F-150 and liked them more than my current BFG 285/70.

i just got done putting wheels and tires on my truck,
99' f-150 lariat
due to the 4x4 i couldnt put any lift smaler than 4in and i didnt want the body lift so i did the torsion bars for an extra 2 in the front.

ended up with 285 kumho 33in tires on an eagle alloy 17x9 wheel

looks good, no rubs.....very happy
