Parking brake cable auto-adjust problem

Hi folks

I'm having a problem getting my parking brake cable adjusted properly. A few days ago one of the cables snapped. I replaced it, and now the parking brake pedal drops to floor and does not return when released. It seems that the auto-adjust in the pedal mechanism is not adjusting itse;f. How can I fix this?

A little detail...Inside the mechanism is the part which holds the cable end. This piece rotates and has teeth about half way around it. Seems like it needs to be rotated at least one turn before it has enough tension on it to do it's job.

The truck I have is a '96 F150, short bed. Rear drums, which are adjusted properly (parking brake worked fine until the cable snap)

Thanks!
