Question Best fitting 33" AT's for stock 17x7.5

I got the Pro Comp AT's almost 3 years ago and have loved every minute of them, however...because of how "rounded" they are (even off the rim) and the fact that I'm running them "pulled in" on the stock 17x7.5's, I have to run 36 psi. in the fronts and 26 psi. in the rears to get any kind of even tread wear. Regardless, the centers of my tires are wearing double the rate of the outer treads and the outer most ones are hardly touched at all. At over $200 a pop, I can't have this. The tires have always looked "squished" because of the low pressure I'm running and this of course kills fuel mileage, etc. To get a proper speedo reading with my old Superchips tuner, I set the tire size to 30.25" which is darn near what I measured them at while on the vehicle, however, in my custom tunes, Mike T. set them at 31.5". ProComp claims 32.3" diameter.

It looks like I'll be needing new meats again next Spring, and I'd like to look into a better fitting tire. Has anyone played with the new Pro Comp Xtreme AT's? How do BFG ATKO's fit / wear on the stockers? I don't want to have to bite the bullet and replace the rims with 17x8's unless I HAVE to. While we're talking about ProComp / BFG's...does anyone have a good price on either of these? I got my BLEMISHED Pro Comps for buy 3 get 1 free and free freight a few winters ago. Anyone have a similar deal on the BFG's? 4WheelParts doesn't sell blems anymore, and they might not do the buy 3 get 1 free deal anymore either. Should I look at another brand AT with 50K mile life expectancy? Thanks!!!

BTW, the ProComps weigh 65lbs. a pop...that's crazy. The guy at 4WheelParts said the new Xtreme AT's aren't anything like the regular AT's in the tread life department. Must be radical AT's with the soft X-terrain compound or something. How about Truxxus?

I'd go with the 285/70-17 (33x11.50) BFG AT KO. I have over 40,000 miles on mine and they should go at least another 20,000. Also, tires are measured unmounted. The weight of the vehicle is "squishing" them and that is why your measurements are so low.

Thanks man, but I dunno if I could live w/o my 12 1/2's now that I've had em. I forgot, only 4 payments left and she's FINALLY mine. $800 on meats won't be *****.

Prob. check out the BFG's in a 33x12.50. If I remember right BFG's have always had a taller shoulder so that should help in my situation I'd think. Any idea what the 33's tread depth is? You're right though...the 11.50's would work out a lot better. Maybe if they're quite a bit cheaper...???

The whole reason your tires are wearing the way they are is because you have a wide tire on a narrow rim...thats gonna happen.

If you get another set of 12.5" wide tires, they are gonna wear like that and/or you'll have to run the PSI real low like that.
Im not trying to be a jerk, I just find it strange that you put wide tires on narrow rims and complain about the unusal wear...

Like wandell said, if you want the tires to wear properly, on the stock wheels, just get 285's.

I just looked, and I dont see a 33x12.5 size for a 17" rim for the BFG A/Ts...so you would be stuck with the 285s anyway if you stick with the ATKOs.

I have 30k miles on 285/70R17 BFG AT KO tires. I just rotated them for the first time at 29k miles. I was running about 35-57psi the whole time. Fronts were a little rounded around the edges, but center was pretty even. Rears were worn flat and even. I just lowered the pressures to 32psi when I rotated them for a softer ride. We'll see how they wear. I'm sure some people would still go another 30-40k miles at the rate they are wearing, but I don't know if I can last that long. I'd like to go smaller.

Yeah I forgot about that...figured they'd added them to the list by now. I see Nitto Terra Grapplers come in a 295/70-17 so I may have to check those out too. Both have 16mm thread depth. Does anyone have actual / on vehicle measurements of either? Maybe I'll just try to hook up some 17x8.5's.

Back when I was deciding on tires, everyone here said there were no issues with 33's on the stockers, that's why I'm complaining, if you want to call it that.

Yeah...agree that the 33x12.50/17's are too fat for a 7.5" wheel, if you want good wear & a balanced look. An LT285/70/17 would fit great. The 295 Grapplers would wear much better than the 12.50's on a 7.5" rim. There are some people around here running 285's on 6" wheels (GM HD's) and the tires look quite pinched, even though some tire shops say it's okay.

Thumbs up

I kinda dig the Nittos, but I think I'll first try to get some 8.5 - 9" wheels to replace the Sawblades. I still have plenty of life left in them so it might be worthwhile. If any of you know of a pair let me know.
