Largest tires without a lift?

What is the size of the largest tires I could manage to put on my 05 F150 XL standard cab 2x4 without a lift kit? I want to raise the clearance level for off road but I do not want lift my truck (so as to not raise the level of the center of gravity).
I am particularly interested in the largest tire size (and wheel dimensions to go with that) which would not hinder my steering and allow my stock shocks to functions properly with out wrecking the body of my truck.

Any help is truly appreciated, since I know I’m asking the right crowd.

He can't use a 16 inch tire. You have to have a 17 inch or larger wheel to fit over the brakes on the 04-05 F-150's. You could probably fit 33's (285/70-17's or 285/65-18's) with a 2.5 inch leveling kit. A 32 inch tire (265/70-17) may fit without any lift.

Has anyone tried putting 22s on a 04-05 F150 4x2 supercrew? I just picked up a 05 and am looking to upgrade.
