Question Tire size for stock 16inch wheels

Im looking to purchase a larger set of tires to put on my current stock 16inch wheels on my 1997 F150 xlt. What size do you reccommend or how large could I go? Im want something more rugged looking, kinda off road style, without having to lift my truck. Please help!!!

Is this a 4x4? Will you actually be going offroad or do you just want the rugged tires?

285/75R16s are about the biggest you can fit on a stock 4x4 with little/no trimming...
265/75R16s are probably what you want to stick to with a 4x2, although you might be able to stick some 285s on it with some modding.

Tires

Its a 4X2 model. Im just looking for a new set of tires and want to go for a more rugged look. Fill up the wheel well gap a little without getting something huge and having to lift my truck. Im keeping the stock 16" wheels on it though. Those tires mentioned in the previous post will fit on the stock wheels correct? Thanks for your help.

Yeah, I'd recommend a 265/75-16 for your stock wheels.

I have 265/75R16s on my truck right now, and they fit fine.
Remember your speedo/odometer will be a little off when you get the larger tires installed.

Brands? Look?

Any idea on who makes a good rugged tire in that size for a decent price?? The 265/75R16s?? Also, how much more tire wall is there from the stock tires that the F150 comes with?

You can answer virtually all those type questions at tirerack.com. Plug in your size and they will show you all the different brands available. Then you can look at the spec page for each brand and it gives the exact dimentions for every size. Customer surveys and ratings give you a good idea of how your favorite brands compare. Go spend a few hours surfing over there and then come back with any specific questions.

Bridgestone Dueler Revo's 285/75/16. Because of the rotating mass you lose acceleration speed. It is a great all terain tire and you'll look bad!
