Question New calipers installed
Question New calipers installed
I just installed new front calipers ,brakes and rotors.
all the fluid came out of mastercylinder when do so.
do i need to bleed the master cylinder and all four wheels
now or can i just bleed the four wheels.
if i need to bleed master how do i go about doing that?
thanks,
Ron

I would start with the wheels. then bleed the master as insurance. use a flair nut wrench and loosen the lines at the master similar to the procedure used at the bleeders on the calipers/ Wheel cylinders.
I am not having any luck getting brakes bled.
had my neighbor who is mechanically incline help and
we feel we got air out. looked in haynes manually and it
says that could be mastercylinder or ABS problem.
what is happening is i can pump up pressure and hold
pedal with truck engine off, but once i let off pedal it will
go to floor again. I bought a new mastercylinder and pedal
feels stiffer when pumping but it still goes to floor after releasingand pushing down again.
We bled master and lines and feel we got all air out.
if there is air in abs where i need the scanner tool, does the pedal act like the symptoms that i am experiencing.
my truck is 97 F150 Offroad 5.4

this will sound a little crazy but make sure your calipers are on right side up. if you put the wrong one on the wrong side the bleeder would face down wich would make it impossible to get all the air out.
just check to make sure
dont ask how i know this...

Yes it can happen, both sides bolt up the same and accept the pads upsidedown so to speak. The bleeder should face up. Switch Left caliper to Right side and Right caliper to Left and rebleed and youll be set.
this picture is not a ford caliper but the principle applies. in order to push the air out the caliper has to fill up with fluid. when the bleeder faces down it cant cause the fluid just falls out leaving air in the upper 1/2...

Good luck......

poolvibe,
thanks for your help.
I am at work right now, but I know I have them on the wrong
side because I remember the bleeder is down.
Boy do I feel like an idiot, but if this is all thats wrong I'm happy.
thanks again and I will let you know how I make out.
Won't be able to get to it til Tuesday night though.

I had another guy tell me, I should pinch lines with vise grips
so master does'nt drain. Is this a normal procedure? and
does it not hurt the rubber line? I assume you squeeze
just enough to stop flow.

Changed the calipers around last night, now I got brakes.
thanks for your help poolvibe.
One thing I noticed is the drivers side wheel does'nt turn as
freely as the passenger side after applying brakes, like the
caliper is not releasing all the way. it was this way when I
had it upside down , on the other side too, so it is that caliper itself.
I can turn the wheel but it is hader to turn than the other
side. Is this a normal thing or could I have gotten a bad
caliper.

Did you clean and lube the slides real good, if not they can hang. I always remove the caliper and the mount so i can reallt detail clean the slides and the guides they go in and make sure everything moves freely.....check the boots for any cracks or areas that are letting dirt in also. Rebleed after reinstlalled....
Yeah,
I did check it all out and greased slides more, they are new
calipers, everything moves freely. I called the place where
I got them they are getting me another caliper to try.
should be in this afternoon.
