variable assist power steering not working

Greetings to all, I really enjoy this forum.

My variable assist pwr steering is currently in default mode where it provides full boost to the steering because of a unknown problem. The vehicle is all over the place when driving straight.

Does anyone know where I should start looking to troubleshoot?

I think there is a little metal wheel someplace and a sensor, but I'm not sure?

First of all, identify your vehicle. Then we know which service documentation to consult. That would be the first place for you to look also.

VAPs not working

The vehicle is a 97 crown vic, but the system is commonly used in many ford vehicles. I checked alldata for any related service bulletins - nothing.

Appreciate any advice.
