285's

I know many people on this site have put 285/75/16 on a 16x10 wheel. But it seems that everyone who has done it had bfg all terrains. I plan to do it with nitto's. Does it make any difference what brand the tire is. anyone with 285's on 16x10 let me know what tires you have. I know wandell said he hasnt had any problems with fitment but has anyone else got some input.

I have to say that if Wandell tells you something about truck tires here you can take it to the Bank...He just knows this stuff...

I have a friend with an Expy that mounted 285/75-16 Nitto Terra Grapplers on 16x10's. So far they are not having any problems. I also know two guys in my town that have 285's and 16x10's. The first set of tires they ran were an off brand that our local stores sell. I think both now have BFG's.

IMO a 16x10 is too wide for a 285, but thats just me. Actually if you look at the wheel reccomendations for some of the 285s they don't list a 10 as being approved. I worked for about 3 years at a tire store doing sales/service so I've been around this before. Anyhow it does depend on the tire you're using as to if this is even remotely safe (IMO none of this setup is which is why I never reccommended it at the shop). Some 285s have a narrower tread width compared to the section. You want to stay away from this since this will have more of a tendency to pull the sidewalls of the tire in. You want something that has the tread width very close in measurements to section width. Basically a square shouldered tire instead of a rounded one. BFGs are pretty good about this, my Trailcutters aren't. Nittos I think are pretty close in tread/section width measurements so you might be ok. I would reccommend that you check with Nitto to see what their reccommended wheel widths are for the 285s. I would stay within that since if you don't and try to turn them in for a tread wear problem they have the grounds there to turn you away. What is generally the rule of thumb for truck tires is keeping the rim width 2.5-4.5" narrower than the tire section width. This means that if you want to run an 8" wheel you can run a 10.5"-12.5" wide tire, or if you want to run a 10" wide wheel you can run a 12.5"-14.5" wide tire. This means about a 305.....MAYBE a 295 is about as narrow as I'd attempt to run on a 10" wheel. This is what I did while doing sales and is the general rule when dealing with truck tires (does not apply to low profile tires). This is something, that depending on what Nitto says about wheel sizes, you may be doing at your own risk.

Powerstroke is right, BFG recommends a maximum rim width of 9 inches for their 285's. I don't beleive that using a 10 inch wide rim is unsafe. Like I said, I knew two people who had run the 285's with 10 inch wide rims for a couple of years without problems. This was why I decided to do it. The main reason I installed them was because BFG didn't make a 305/70-16 at the time and I had to have BFG's (which was a great decision). My next tires will probably be 305's. a qwwst

my prob is that i already purchased the 16x10 wheels and i dont want to lift my truck. I would do a suspension lift but i cant afford it and i dont want to do a body lift. Thats why i was gonna go with the 285's, since i wouldnt have to trim as much. 02supercrew4x is gonna post some pics on a different thread to show me how much i will have to cut for the 305's. I guess i will just have to wait for the pics and decide after that. I would like to buy my tires very soon so if anyone else has an opinion please let me hear it. thanks

I would go with a minimum of a 295/75/16 but would reccommend the 305/70/16. This will fit the 16x10s much better and should you ever have a warranty issue they can't argue misapplication. For the trimming I can tell you exactly where you'll have to cut. If you follow the fender flares on the front to the bottom at the rear of them you'll see it curves inward some. If you were to cut off the inward curve so that they come straight down you will avoid rubbing there. Then look at the plastic valance under the front bumper. Right at the terminus of them you will cut them so they somewhat follow the arc of the tires. Basically you will cut off the corner of the valance closest to the tire. The only other place any rubbing will occur is on the frame, but that only happens with stock wheels.

Before trimming
After trimming
