Question about stock center caps

I am about to put brakes on my truck for the first time. And I need input on how to remove the center caps without scratching the surface of the wheel or messing up the caps themselves. I took a large screwdriver and tryed to pry the thing off, only to put two small scratches on my polished aluminum wheel. When I finally got the center cap off, I noticed that I had dented the edges of the cap where the indention is to pry them off. I was thinking of taking an old T-shirt and ripping off a small piece to put over the tip of the screwdriver so that it doesn't do much damage next time I try it. Is this a good idea? I'm open to all suggestions. Thanks.

Wrap electrical tape around the pressure points.

I use one of those brake adjuster tools that I dipped in that rubberized coating stuff. It works great!

Thanks for the suggestion FrankLee. I'll try the electrical tape for now. But that's a good idea too.
