35"procomps on stock wheels
35"procomps on stock wheels
i have a '99 f150 4x4 stepside and am wanting to put 35 tires on and was wondering if i will need wheels. i went the place that would install the lift and they said i would probly need wheels to go with the 315/75R16 procomp all-terrains....something about the "off set"? i dont know anything about fitting tires.... i then went to a tire store and they said they could mount those tires on my stock 17" wheels. who is right here? any help would be appreciated. thanks
Well 315/75/16 will only fit on a 16" diameter wheel. You say you have 17" wheels, so they definitely won't fit on those wheels.
You might need to figure out the width of the rim, but I'll have to let someone else tell you which width would work best on that size tire as Im not sure.

I have seen a rule of thumb that your tires should be between 2-4" wider than your wheel. I know the FX4 17's are 7.5" wide, which is 5" less than a 12.50 tire. I wouldn't do that, and you'll have to have some sort of lift if you are going to run 35's on anything but the stock wheel.

There are a few people here and several at FTW that are running 315/70-17 (35x12.50-17) BFG AT KO's on stock 17x7.5 inch rims without any problem. Running 12.50 width tires on a 7.5 inch wide rim will cause the center portion of the tire to wear slightly faster than normal. So yes, you can run the 35x12.50-17 Pro Comps on the stock wheels at the cost of slightly decreased tire life.

in this picture, these wheels are the same stock wheels that are on my truck. it says this guy is running 315/70/17 bfg's with the stock wheels. how bad would the tread wear if i did this? thanks

The 10 inch wide rims make them look bigger. My next tires will probably be 305/70-16's. Nobody in my area seems to have any experience in ring and pinion installation and I feel that I would have to regear with 35's since I have 3.55 gears.
