1995 4wd front hub removal problems

Hey guys/(gals), I'm in the process of replacing the brakes and shocks on my StepDad's F150 that my Mom inherited when he passed away this past September - it's a GREAT truck and was owned by a GREAT Man. It's a 1995 4x4, with 302 engine and has manual lock-out hubs. Per his Haynes manual, I pulled the cap assembly expecting to find a lock ring seated in the wheel hub; a stop screw in the outer portion of the hub body; and possibly a snap-ring but they're not there! The manual further references a "model 44" axle with manual hub locks requiring a special locknut tool to disengage self-locking mechanism. How can I tell if this is a "model 44" and if so, how is this tool used. Also, with 125,000 miles, while I've got the hubs and rotors off, what else should I look at replacing (ie, bearings or other related items)?
