Axle seal replacement and brakes
Axle seal replacement and brakes
I got my rear rotors resurfaced (at Midas for $5 each!!!) and went to replace the brake pads. I had just a little bounce in the rear at low speed indicating they were warped a little. When measured on the lathe, I was told one was out 0.005" and the other was out 0.010". Anyway, I found out first that Autozone had sold me bad pads. The notch that is supposed to be at front of the pads was not at the front on all the pads so they would not fit. Had to go back. I worked on the drivers side first then went to the passenger side. Then I found out my axle seal was leaking grease. So I had to dump about $50 worth of synthetic oil that I recently put in trying to get rid of the traction lok chatter in corners. The axle seal cost less than $3 from Ford. I had not been into a Ford diff with traction lok (9.75" rear), but it had the c-clips on the ends of the axles just like what I had seen before. The leaking axle seal and slight rear rotor warpage are the only problems I have had with my truck in 80K miles. I bought it new in May of 2000. I am still running two of the original tires. Two of them were cracked so bad that I had the spare put on and bought one new one at 77K. Most of my miles have been on the highway. The tires are Good Year Wrangler 255/70x16 RTS.
