ABS system compatibility
ABS system compatibility
Alright I've got a question for those of you that know the ABS/valving system. If you are currently running a system with front disks and rear drums with 4 wheel abs and you convert the rear over to disk brakes does the ABS adjust on its own or not. I've heard that if its a 4 wheel ABS system that it will adjust without changing the proportioning valve and that if its a 2 wheel ABS system it needs the valve swapped out. Does anyone know of the 4 wheel system is capable of making the necessary pressure/flow adjustments on its own, or does the valving need to be changed.
You already know that the pumpkin holds the one ABS sensor for the rear brakes so if the disk brake equipped rear end has this sensor in the pumpkin too it should all bolt up.
One of my concerns would be the emergency brake cables. Are they the same as on the drum brakes or would you have to swap them from the emergency brake pedal all the way back to make them work?
The valving is a big ? to me. I would disable the ABS and gradually brake harder and harder until I managed to lock the brakes. The rear brakes should lock up at one point, therefore verifying that they are at least getting sufficient pressure before the ABS starts modulating the rear brake pressure. If they never lock up w/o the ABS connected you'll know right off the bat that the valving does not provide enough pressure to the rear brakes under hard braking conditions.
If you did the ABS disconnect thing I just mentioned with the drum brakes, and then again after you put in the rear disk brakes you shoul see similar results.
It's all I got, I hope it helps somehow. Good luck.
