Question 15" wheels cheaper?

I have been looking for new tires and wheels and was wondering why 15" wheels and tires seem to be so much cheaper than the 16" and 17" wheels. Is there anything different, performance wise, about them, other than than the obvious size difference? Or since 16" and 17" seem to be more popular thats why they are cheaper. Any suggestions?

If you have a '97 or later truck, 15" rims will not fit. I think 16" is the smallest that'll work.

SOME 15's WILL fit. I've seen them up close and personal. They were 15x10 Prime wheels. But most companies Do stick to the 16's and 16.5's

I was under the impression that none would fit until I saw the post by ccla.I thought the brake calipers were in the way.

Basically, 15" wheels were the norm for several years. All the conversion trucks in the early to mid 90s got 15" rims and 275/60s. Also, from the factory Ford and the others had 15" stock rims on their full size trucks. Then when Ford (1996) and the others came out with their new model trucks, 16" wheels were standard. So, yes 15" tires are cheaper because there are more of them out there. Soon, 16" tires will become cheaper. In 97, I was pricing 285/60s. BF Goodrich was the only company that made that size. They were going for $150 and up a tire. Now, other tire companies are making them. I just got some Goodyears for $90 a tire. I really do not like the look of 15x10 rims on the 97+ F-150 2WDs. 4x4s are not so bad. Just my $.02.
