Question Speedo Recalibration on '00-'01s

Hey guys, I got a quick question here for those of you with digital odometers. I am planning on getting an '01 F-150 4x4 and noticed that the new odos are digital. When I had my Ranger, all I had to do was change the speedo gear in the transfer case to recalibrate for the bigger tire size. Can you still do this on the F-150 (is it mechanical?) or do you need a chip or something else. I don't plan on changing the gearing either.

Out of all the people lifting their trucks and putting on bigger meats, someone knows the answer to this. I'd appreciate the help,

Thanks,

From what I understand the computer needs to be recalibrated by Ford or a custom program has to be written by Superchips.

I have already talked to many people in my area about this. Alhough I am going to a smaller size tire rather than a larger size it should work the same on all 99-01 trucks with the digital odometer. I have been told that you need to have a ford dealership recalbrate your computer for the tire size. I was told that a chip can recalbrate for diffrent rear end gears, but can't recalbrate for tire size. It doesn't make any sense to me it's just the way that ford makes the trucks.

Question

Any idea of cost to have Ford do it?
Any warranty issues?

Has anyone actually had this done? Or is this just a legend or folk lore?

Neither Ford nor any of the aftermarket chip makers have been able to successfully reprogram the speedo on the '01 F-150s.

For what it's worth, I had 275/70/16 Michelin LTX M/S put on my '01 SCrew today, and immediately headed put to the highway to check the speed/odo. At 60 mph indicated, a three mile course took 179.6 seconds one way and 179.55 seconds back, indicating the speedo (and therefore assumably the odometer) is just about dead nuts on. (off by what-%0.2). At 75 indicated, I am actually travelling about 1mph off. In conversation with a Ford Certified tech at the dealership, he said Ford will allow 4mph plus or minus before they get concerned.

I just called my local Ford dealer today and asked about the PSOM (Programmable Speedometer/Odometer Module) for the newer F-150s. The service advisor told me there is a formula they use to reprogram the computer and that they could do it no problem for me if I went to 33's when I get my truck. Just thought you'd like to know that it does exisit.

I contacted Hypertech and they will have a reprogrammer available around the 1rst off the year for 2000 f-150.They should have one for 99 before Christmas. You will be able to compensate for almost any upgrade including tire sizes.98 is available now.

On my '99, the local Ford place could NOT get the computer to accept the parameters for recalibration (235/70-16 to 255/70-16 & 3.08 to 3.55 gears) after repeated attempts. Superchips is the next option, as I have put larger tires on my '00 4x4. Mike Troyer is the man to talk to. Doc

Question

Riotrob, how did you come up with the formula for the tire size and speedo readings. I have a 285x75x16, original was 255x70x16.
