Maximum tire size in spare well?
Hi all,
I've recently (April '00) bought a 97 Lariat 4x4 SuperCab, currently with P255/70R16 Goodyears. I'm looking at replacing them with BFG 285/75R16s, but am a) concerned that the larger tire will not fit in the spare wheel well underneath the bed, I don't want to lug it lying on top of the bed; and b) will they fit on my non-ORP lariat 4x4 model (I'm guessing yes, but someone else on the message boards mentioned that it was a close fit and the shop thinks the ORP might have helped). I've also considered just going with 265s instead of 285s...but I know I have to ditch these Goodyears before winter comes
Also, anyone have on-hand info on the general price differences between 265s and 285s? I hope I've conveyed all the necessary details... if not let me know and I'll provide them as possible.
Thanks for the help! This board is a great resource... it's helped me emerge from my "truck newbie" stages

That is a good quesion.wish I had an answer. The only thing that I can tell you is that a 285/75 will not fit under there if you have a reciever hitch. You could have the tire shop mount one up on a wheel and pull your spare off and see if that bad boy will fit or not.

I have to say that the 285/75/16 Bfg does fit in the spare tire space, I have the reciever and dual exhaust...IF I have exhaust out the side the 35s might fit, would have to try that first though...Will just keep the 285 for a spare for now....Like the other member said just trying it will ease you mind....Dave

I've got a minimum of 2 inch clearance all around my reciever with a 255x70x16 spare. Looks like a 16" tire that was 4" taller would fit. It doesn't matter to me though, when I replace with taller tires I'm just doing four as I don't include the spare in rotation. I have a different rim on the spare and it's not OWL. I would limp to get a flat fixed with the smaller original spare on the front.

apparently the 285 will fit with your reciever hitch, but there is no way it would with mine.Apparently,it depends on the brand hitch that you have.I could see possibly squeezing a tire that might be 1/2 inch bigger diameter in mine and that would be pushing it.
