Question bigger tires for stock 17" wheels

I've got a '98 4x4 extended cab that came with 17" wheels...currenty have P265/70/R17s...what is a bigger tire that might fit on these rims? I know about ProComp's 33"/12.5/17; are there any others? I don't want to lift the truck...at least not yet. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Goodyear makes the Wrangler GSA in a 275/70R17 and will soon be making the Wrangler AT/S in the same. There is not a whole lot of info on tires for the Ford 17" rims, but I went out on a limb and just ordered the ProComp MT 305/70R17's. I got them for just a little more than what the GSA's would cost at Tirerack. I really wanted to get larger tires, but was tempted by the sale on the 265/70R17 Wrangler AT's at tirerack, but 4wheelparts.com will deal on the prices quite a bit. Also check out4xxxx4.com. I got the lowest prices here, but found them after i ordered.

Thanks, notloc1. The Wrangler GSA LT275/70/R17 tires sound like a good deal. I got Walmart to order them for $119 each. Thats much cheaper than the P265/70/R17s I was planning on getting...

Question

notloc1.,
Have you installed those MT 305's yet? How do they fit? I talked to a guy that deals with Pro Comp and he said that they would rub on my truck (w/ no lift.)

do they make a 315? I need some 315s (35s) and I really didn't want to buy new rims too, but looks like I will have to.

I just got the tires today, so i should get them put on this week. From earlier posts that i have read i think that i will be ok after tightening up the torsion bars a hair. From just setting the tires next to the truck it looks like i will have plenty of clearance front and rear of the tire.
I guess I'll find out though. I'll keep you posted.

Hey- probably too late, but I'm running a set of Mickey Thompson Baja Belted's on my '98. Don't have the specs in front of me, but they're 34's on my stock 17 inch rims. Only had to cut the plastic shroud at the front a little bit to make them fit. I have had them rub a bit at times, but only when doing some serious off-roading.

Question

Food for thought.
I saw a blazer that had two nice face imprints in the windshield.
The tire blew when they were four wheelin' from the tire "rubbing a bit at times". It was a slow wearing process and was evident on the tire and fender.

Their set up was identical to mine but I went 1 tire size smaller. After seeing that, rubbing is not an option.

Both Mickey T and Super S make a 31x10 and 32x11 respectively. I saw a truck yesterday that had 33*13 Mickey T and there were signs of rubbing EVEN w/ a 3" body lift.
Anyhow, food for thought.

Thumbs up

Well, I just got my truck with the new Pro/Comps. They ride great(On paved roads. dirt, and gravel), are not too loud(I can barely hear them over my exhaust) and make the truck look awesome(Personal opinion anyway). I have the ORP with the torsion bars turned a little(1/2"-1") and there is a ton of room left. I could be wrong, but I think that if my tires rub then I have more problems than just tire size. When you think about it though, the originl GY's are 32" and these are 33", so really you only loose 1/2" of clearance. Like I said before though, I guess I'll find out if I'm wrong because I'll see the wear on the tires and fenders. My first opinion is that Pro/Comp may have a solution for all the ORP owners looking for better/bigger tires.

to compare, the tires mentioned are real close in height but what are the width differences.
I thought that the procomps were supposed to be close to 11-12 wide. Where as the stocks are just about 8" wide.

Notloc, have you been able to put them under compression and then turn the tires both ways to full lock? One way to accomplish this is to jack up the A-arm unit as much as possible. I had discount do this for me on my other truck and that helped a lot.
Keep us up to date on your tires. I'm looking to up grade from these GY junks.
Like you I want something like a MT but I want to keep the ride quality if possible, and lower noise levels.

I have not compressed the fron end , but I have checked for interference when the wheel is cranked. The original GY's had 8" of tread, but the section width was about 10" i think so these shoud be about 2" wider total. They have room even with the wheel cranked and it looks like it would be ok when the suspension flexes.

I have no complaints as of yet. I need to get my alignment done, but I was expecting that. I got to drive in the rain today and could hardly get them to bark. I reset my chip so my mileage sucked, but it should rise again.

Notloc1 -

Do you have any pics of those Procomps on your rig? I'd really like to see how they look before ordering the 305/70R17s

Did you put these on the stock 17" chrome rims or did you buy new rims? I was told the stock rims were 7.5" wide and would not accomodate that width. Pleadse let em know as I am installing the 3" spindles this weekend and I already did the 3" body lift. I am assuming that I will need to pick out some new rims( shucks I hate that....LOL not as much as she does) Just another reason to buy another toy for my toy.

Just a point of info. I have the Goodyear Wrangler 265/65/17 on my SCrew 4x4. They wander all over the road. Looking for another brand as we speak. I would definitly stay away from the Goodyears.
