Red face Pro Comp Tires??

Hey Guys,
I was just searching the internet and discovered that Pro Comp (www.procomptires.com)is now making tires to fit the 17in. rim. The only thing that confuses me is that all these tire companies claim they're making tires to fit OEM 17in. rims, yet all the tires require a 8 inch wide rim. Does anyone know what would happen if we were to put these tires on the OEM 17 in. wheels? Would they just simply not fit? Any opinions would be greatly appreciated!!

It all depends on the tire size. If you put a tire on a rim that's too narrow, you give up a lot of sidewall stiffness which can cause pretty sloppy handling especially in emergencies, wiping out the benefit of the wider tire. If it's way too narrow, you may actually lose some of your contact patch, which again was the reason for the wider tire in the first place. It is extremely unlikely that you would roll the tire off the rim or anything like that. Just stick with the manufacturer's recommendation and you won't have any problems. All the tire manufacturers publish recommended rim widths on their web sites, go out and search a few, you'll get some ideas of what you can and cannot do.
