Question Wheel Squeek 98 F-150XLT 4X4

Does anyone have a similar squeek? It occurs on the front passanger side wheel. I can't seem to figure out the cause. Any info would be great. Thanks.

I have the notorious squeek too. I have seen several posts on this. One guy said it was some kind of aluminum shield behind the wheel with a loose kotter pin? Maybe that was a different sound, I don't know. I do know that my '97 4x4 has had it every since I got it and I haven't figured out where it is coming from yet. I have yanked, pulled, tapped and sprayed everything down there and haven't been able to reproduce it sitting still or stop it yet. I haven't had a chance to pull the wheels and look for a kotter pin, if this has been the culprit on anyone elses, please reply. Mine happens at pretty low speed whenever a slight bump in the road is encountered, how about yours?

T,
Thanks for your response. Mine happens all the time regardless of speed. I really have no idea what it is. It kind of sounds like an uneven balance in the wheel of some sort, but I have no clue.

I am beginning to think that my jingle may even be a whistle instead of a rattle.

Still lookin'

I stand corrected. At lunch today I found out mine is not only at low speed either. My tires and exhaust create enough noise that it kind of muffles it but when driving by a tall wooden privacy fence today I could hear the squeek bouncing back at me. It kind of sounds like loose center caps, the clips sqeeking on the plastic or something, on both sides but I know that isn't it. I have checked too many times. I have changed brake pads in the past and it didn't go away so it is not wear indicators rubbing or anything. I really have no clue.

Hi all-

I mentioned this in another thread, but it's something to consider- I had a similar problem, and checked everything- suspension, brakes, wheels..... nothing. Then one day I was washing my truck and grabbed the tailgate to jump up...... there was that squeek / rattle. It was the latch mechanism on the right side. A little WD40 and it went away. If you check for this, do it when the truck is level- if the bed is canted you probably won't hear it. And believe me, the sound I was hearing did not in any way seem like it was coming from the tailgate, so I never checked there. It has reappeared a couple of times, but the WD40 takes care of it.

good luck-

Thumbs up

"Just to add to the discussion. I too have suffered from squeeks. Took 3 try's at the dealer to get an answer other than "could not duplicate"
On the last trip, I drove into the Service bay, found a service writer, handed him the keys, and said fix the squeek or keep the truck.

They found out what was wrong. To my surprise three of four shock bolts were loose. The tech re-torqued all of the shocks, and showed me how loose they were.

I hope this will not be a repetitive problem..will keep you guys informed.

If you hear it on your truck, it sounds like a rubber on metal squeek, and it happens at any speed."

Just found this from way back in 99. It is definately worth a shot.

My squeek occurs at any speeds. I can duplicate it better at lower speeds though. It happens when the tires are moving and almost sounds like if you have a nail in your tire. That kind of repitition. Clink,clink,clink,clink.... It seems like that everytime the tire goes around the squeek occurs. However, this does not happen all the time. I could be driving straight away and it will start sounding and then go away. Any ideas??? It is just very annoying!!
