Question groaning brakes

my 2002 f150 supercrew has started groaning sometimes when i brake. a few weeks ago it did alot of squealing when i braked, but my husband checked the brakes a said they didn't need replaced, probably just dust ( i live in arizona). the squealing is gone but now i have a groan. high speed braking and city braking
warranty is up, so i hate going in when regular guy knowledge will do. (my husband is out of town hunting)

thanks

me too

Darlin',
I have the same noise comign from my brakes... I just bought my truck last weekend, and it had the same issues,so I am going to jack it up and take a look at the brakes this weekend (I'm a mechanic, so no prob there)... I'll report back to you on what I find... As far as what I know... the groaning sound is from a low harmonic vibration which could indicate a warped rotor... it is more noticible when the pads are getting warn, and warped rotrs tend to wear pads in an odd pattern that makes it worse the longer you let it go. The squealing is from high frequency vibration... that could be brake dust or it could be the "squealers" going off telling you to replace the pads NOW!!! I'd just take it to a brake shop that you trust. If your man is a mechanic, then he will be able to spot this too... Again, I'll let you knwo what mine turns out to be, but more than likely you need pads and maybe a rotor...

Unhappy

thats it exactly! went into a brake shop. metal to metal on right front brake/rotor. they were able to "fix" the rotor, didn't have to replace it. new brake pads and 180 dollars later, i'm good to go.
lesson learned.

thanks!

I was going to suggest the same thing. Mine did the same thing a few months ago, but it was a one-time only occurrence, so I never thought twice about it. Then, the rumbling.groaning started, and by then it was too late. The wear indicator that's supposed to squeal (and for the record DID once) had broken off due to rust.

Glad you got it fixed.

new brakes on the way....

Well, I looked at mine... I need new rear rotors and pads.. the front ceramics and discs are good... I have a bro that can get me parts cheap so I am in under less than $100 for the whole job with my own elbo grease... but what's that (???)... 2 hrs maybe... I was really happy to see the easy change on these brakes (as opposed to say a GM)... GLAD to hear yall had an easy time of it as well... Drop me a line if yall are near H-town...

Very nice to see someone else in the H-town vicinity! I just got my truck back in September, a 2001 Supercab XLT 4x4 with the 5.4L, Oxford White. I love the truck! I did have to change the front pads not too long ago when a local idiot driver pulled out in front of me and I couldn't change lanes to avoid him. But things are good now, truck is better than ever.

I guess we learn a costly lesson about the imprtance of checking pads regularly. The damage is created quite quickly.
