285/75/16 on factory rims?

I am still trying to decide on some tires. I currently have the 255/70/16 on the factory 16x7 rim. I want to go to a 285/75/16 and they recommend a minimum of a 7.5 rim. Can I safely run this big of a tire on a 16x7 rim? Are there any adverse effects on the tire by doing this?

Thanks,

I had BFG LT285/75R16's on my stock 98 wheel, 16x7 with no problems. There are many on this board running this size combo with no problems.

Good luck

Question

What about loss of power. I just ordered the Superchips tuner, Magnaflow cat-back exhaust and Airforce one air intake. Will I be losing some or most of that horsepower gain by increasing from 255/70R/16 to 285/75R/16? Jon

twoshots,

You are basically going from a 30" tall tire to a 33" tall tire, so there WILL be an effective gear ratio change. Your speedo and odo will be off until it's adjusted. For example, after you get the new tires, when your speedo says 60 mph, a cop with a radar gun will show 66 mph......

Assuming you have 3.55 gears now, you would have to get at least 3.90 gears to make up the difference from what you have now. Since they don't make a 3.9 gear for our rears, you'll have to get a 4.10 to regain it all back.

Here's a web site that lets you play with all the numbers and such.

tire calculator

Good luck!

I have 285/75/16 on Ultra machines aluminum rims. I noticed the center of the tread did not wear as quickly because the walls dont have to bow in as much. You'll be fine with the same size tire on a factory rim. I actually just bought the rims because they weren't much more than replacement factory center caps!

Trust me, you can put 285/75/16's on your truck. i know this because #1. I have them on my truck. and #2. Because I work at Discout Tire Co.
