Just got home!!

It's been awhile since I've visited this forum, but it appears to be going as strong as ever. I just got home from buying a 2002 F-150, XLT, 4x4, super crew, 5.4 with 22,500 miles. I like the looks of the factory rims, but the 265's are too small. I have a 98 F-150 4x4 w/285's and they look nice. Does anyone know the biggest tired that will fit on my new 02 F-150 without lifting the truck? Also what would I need to do to have the speedometer read correctly once I put on the larger tires? Thanks in advance!!

You already answered your own question. There were no significant changes between 98 and 02. You might be able to go up to a 305/70/16 or a maybe a 75 series, but 305s are a little too wide for factory rims. Minimum width you want to run is an 8" wheel. Most of the tire stores around me (including the one I worked in) would not sell tires of that size unless you had an 8-10" wheel to put them on. If we put them on factory wheels then if the tires wore funny or something happened you could come back and sue us. But you may expereince some weird or premature tire wear, not to mention you'd be putting too much pressure on the bead. That about does it for the reasons behind that. There are people out there who do it, but if something happens to the tire you may be sol on your warranty, so 285s are about the biggest you can go with no rubbing and no other issues. As far as the speedo, your 98 had a VSS gear on the side of the transfer case. On your 02 its computer controlled so you'll need either the dealer to do it or buy a microtuner to reset it.
