Question about stock rims
Question about stock rims
Hi guys. I'm a newbie here. I have been lurking a while and decided to register here because it's the most informative website I have seen about Ford trucks. Now I have a question that maybe someone can answer. I have a 2002 F-150 Scab Lariat, 4.6L. The stock Lariat rims according to Ford are chrome plated steel. But just from my own observation and the "touchy-feely" test, they appear to be a plastic cover permanently bonded to the steel wheel. This is the same type of wheel that another user on here was selling on E-Bay. Am I correct in assuming that these wheels have a bonded plastic cover, or am I completely full of it?
Thanks.
Thanks.
Truth be told, plastic over steel.
Ford was having so many complaints on the '99s that they went back to offering the "dirrectionals". I still see newer trucks with them on and not sure why. Maybe requested.

My coworker has a Lariat and it *appears* to have the same rims my '03 STX has. When cleaning them, I thought they felt like true chrome, and seem to scratch like chrome, and respond to chrome polish correctly.
Now, the hubcaps themselves sure are plastic of some sort.

Yes, yes, those are the same wheels I have. I do believe that they are a plastic cover bonded to steel. The reply I got from VaughtF150 confirmed my suspicions. But go and really look at them and feel around where the openings go to the inside of the wheel. It's gotta be plastic. It even feels like plastic. Plastic can be chromed, so there's no doubting that's a chrome finish, but it's plastic.
