Goodyear Wrangler AT/S 265/70R/17 Tires??
I just bought a set of the Goodyear Wrangler AT/S 265/70R/17 tires from someone here on line. The tires look great and have about 5K miles on them. My question is do you normally hear lots of road noise with these tires? Its not just one tire, but sounds like all of them are pretty loud on the road. I had the BFG Long Trails before and they are quiet as can be, or what I would call normal. Any one know if this is normal for these tires and are the RT/S tires less noisy? My truck is an F150 4X2 2000 Lariat.

Larry,
I have the Goodyear Wrangler RT/S 265/70R/17's on my truck. They came stock. I think Ford does this because they get a good deal from the tire manufacture and because they look a "little" aggressive and are quite on the road.
You have the AT "All Terrain" so yes, it is to be expected that you will hear more road noise from them. They are a more aggressive tire than the RT. A buddy of mine has them and they are louder than mine.
From past expirence from sme of my friends that have both, I will be selling mine before hitting 1000 miles and buying the Bridgestone Dueler AT's. The Goodyear tires, IMHO, have really bad tread wear!
I put the Duelers on my 99' F-150 when Firestone had a few customer service problems with recalls. My local dealer traded even from Wilderness HT 235/70R/16's to 265/75R/16's. The HT I had wasn't even under recall. I got lucky!
My Duelers were considerably louder that the HT's that were on there but they LOOKED SUPER! It's all in what you want. More noise means more aggressive tread means meaner looking truck!!
Good luck!

70k kms which is about 42k miles (?), and my AT/S's have 13/32" left on them. I *wish* they would wear out faster, but the good thing is at this rate, i should have enough time to decide between 265 BFGs or 33" procomps.

Larry,
Yes, I have had both the RT/S and now AT/S. The AT/S's are louder but it is a much better tire than the RT/S.

I've noticed a bit of road noise over the RT/Ss, but not much. The grille guard howling drowns most of it out.
But seriously, it's a VERY good tire, especially compared to the RT/Ss. The ATs grip well in the rain and snow (unlike the RTs). I think it's a fair trade off. Plus, you're comparing it to an extremely quiet road tire, so the difference will be even more noticable for you.

I had the AT/S's on my 99', they were great in the snow, o.k. in mud, and good in the sand. I had a problem with mine cupping real bad, so they sounded like mud tires. So I replaced them with Wild Countries, I really liked those tires. I go thru tires like crazy(generally) as long as I can keep them from spinning? But I had no complaints about them except the cupping, which was probly from always adjusting air pressure for the sand dunes.

Hey Larry, how about some Michelins? just got 4 Ltx m/s 275/70/16 for my truck. You can get them orwl or blackwall (mine), they look awsome, are very quiet and have a very aggressive look, not to mention they filled in the wheel wells very nicely!!!! I highly reccomend them!

Hey Bambino,
I have the same problem! My RT/S tires have 70000 kms on them, and still have about half of the tread left. I'm also thinking about the BFG All-Terrains, or going with a 33. Did you know that BFG has just come out with a 37" All Terrain T/A for a 17" wheel? Problem with this is that it would require a gear change with these tires. If I'm not mistaken their 265/70/17 All Terrain T/A's are equivalent to a 31" tire. Anybody know for sure? I think these are the tires I'm going to go with, anybody have any good experience with them? I'm not too worried about road noise, and I spend 3/4's of the time driving city/highway, and the other 1/4 off road.

I have 43,000 miles on my BFG's and, to my astonishment, still have tread left(I drive way to fast). They are great in the mud, but I haven't had them in any SERIOUS mud, just stuff here on my farm, and they handle excellently on the highway.
Yep, buddy has at's and loves them - stock size 265/70r17
