Talking Difference Between 10" and 12" wheels?

Hi all!
Can anyone tell me what differences there is between a 10 and 12 inch wheel besides 2 inches. Do they handle or ride any different on blacktop?
I'm running with 10's now but am considering buying some 12's. They recommend 12" wheels on the sidewall of my tires but really like the way they handle now and don't want to mess up a good thing.

Before purchasing, I'd recommend a "test fit". With your lift kits, the body may be OK, but really wide tires & wheels may cause rubbing in other (suspension/frame) areas. Mostly depends on the offset & back-spacing of the rim. Also, some shops can't or won't work on rims wider than 10".

Thanks nomo, thats a good idea. I think I have seen some people on this site that have run 12's, hoping they might chime in. I'm looking at the Weld Sidewiders which have a
4 5/8 backspace.

Hey man,

Don't know what kind of lift you have, but was considering getting my truck lifted and Fabtech said that the 4 5/8 backspacing will work with their kit. Don't know if this will help or not.

Hi Scott, in my opinion and being my truck a daily driver I would go up to 10" with the right backspacing, no more. It would create too much stress on steering and suspension components unless you can custom fabricate a set of wheels with special specs like backspacing and offset to minimize this. Your tires look great in those 10" wheel, but imagine what can happen with 12" wheels on the rubbing department. If we move out too much the OEM wheel centerline may affect handling negatively and if we add the unsprung weight of those heavy meats to this changes it is going to be worst. It can be done but it's going to take something back. It is going to be a nightmare unless you are planning to go taller.

Some day someone will have a 16" lift on one of this trucks and 14" wheels.... this is something that never stops...

This came to my mind just a minute ago and since this is your post I know it will get to you fast. How noisy (if noisy at all) are the PJ's?

Hey Joe, have not really made up my mind but you are right in I'm leaning towards getting them. Thats why I would like to talk to somebody that has actually run with 12's or knows someone so I can get some first hand info. Thanks for the useful info though.

Hey Scott, do you remember that 97 white supercab with big MT's? It was one of the first lifted F150's that I saw. If I can find a photo I will send it to you. Going back to the 2" maybe they are not too much compared to the 10" rims, but when we compare that to the 7.5" OEM rims that's another story. Good luck in your quest and whatever your decision I hope everything is going to work fine.

JMTruck, Thanks for the reply.
The backspacing appears to be the same on the 10's as it is on the 12's, 4 5/8. Am I missing something? Wouldnt the 2" move the tire out, not in. I see you point about the stress but it is only 2 inches with the same tires. I could see it affecting it a bit but do you really thing it is that big of a difference? and as far as rubbing, it looks like it would only rub a bit with the tires sharply turned with the suspension copressed. I'm wondering if it wider stance would handle on the street basiclly the same?

As far as how loud the Dirt Grips are, best way to describe it is, louder than BFG Muds and quiter than Super Swampers. Not sure if that answers you question.
