Difficulty of replacing brakes?

My 1999 F150 4X4 5.4 V8(4-wheel disc) currently needs a brake job. I have never done a brake job myself and was wondering how difficult it is to do, how much time I could expect to spend, and what tools might be needed. Thanks

o.k. do a search first there are tons of threads on this.

if you are somewhat mechanically inclined and have a safe flat place to jack the truck up (NOT WITH THE STOCK JACK) you should be able to do the job in an hour or two.

required tools/equipment;
floor/bottle jack
jack stand
lug wrench
18 and/or 19mm socket and wrench
large "C" clamp or large pair channel locks
10" piece of coat hanger or stiff wire (To hold the caliper)
brake clean and a catch pan
anti seize (for the new rotors)
a big dead blow or ball pien hammer or sawsall to get your rusted stuck on rotors off (If you plan on replacing the rotors that is)
torque wrench to propperly put the rim back on
i am sure i am forgetting something.

if you still want directions after you do a search please let me know and i will be glad to help!

Thanks for the reply hcmq. Looks like is shouldn't be too bad. I was planning on putting Bendix Titanium pads on the stock rotors(after machining rotors). Do you see any problem with this? Also would you recommend doing the back brakes at the same time even if they are not necessarily worn down? Thanks.

Very easy to do if you are mechanically inclined. Front brakes are a breeze. Hardest part for me on my 97 Lariat was repacking the bearings and replacing the seals. I would also inspect the rears, and not necessarily replace them unless they are worn to the limit. Your front brakes provide about 85% of the stopping power for your vehicle.
Good luck.

Four wheel disk normally wear fronts two to one to the back. The 4X's don't need to worry about packing front bearings as the rotors slide off( if your lucky, most of the one I have seen need some moderate persuation with a dead blow hammer)
