Does anyone have goodyear MT/R's and the 4.6?
I need to know from guys who are running the goodyear mt/r's on the 4.6 supercab 4x4's. I want to upgrade to 285/70r17 or even 305 but im really concerned about losing power and mpg. I average around 13.5-14.5 all over driving. I have pretty good power i would say for my 4.6, ie. superchip, af1 intake and true dual flowmasters. I also want to know how well they handled on-road not just offroading. Like in the rain, hard turns. Do you feel more bumps?
Any kind of information would be great. also pics would be nice.

Hey 97,
I have the mt/r's only in a 265 size. I will be going with a 285 on my next set. I have had this set on for 4 years in January. I have over 40,000 miles on them. They have been a great set of tires. They are extremely tough and have done great off-road. I spend a lot of time on logging roads and dirt roads getting to hiking trails. The only tire I've had that did better in mud was a swamper. But, that set only lasted around 20,000 miles. These tires are very quiet on the road and the manners in the wet and snow have been great. Mine are just starting to get loud, and it's because they are just about gone. These tires are heavy, so I'm sure ou will notice a difference going to a 33" tire. I have no reservations about running the 285's on my truck and I don't have near the mods you do. Hope this helps.

Rich

thanks rich.
Im concerned about the loss in power, kinda. I have the af1, superchip and true duals. So im making a little more power then stock. Just trying to decide on what size now. I dont care about the noise. Its a truck i want it to sound loud. If i wanted something quiet i would've gotten a lexus. Im glad that they perform well in the rain too. Big concern for me since it can get pretty ugly here in jersey.
thanks

Hey 97,
It sounds like all the mods you have on your truck you should be making power similar to what I get out of my 5.4.
With that said I have 285 MT/R's and while there is a noticable difference from stock you forget about it after about 100 miles of driving.
What you may want to think about is your tranny. The MTR's are heay tires, and that adds a lot of centrifical weight which must be started moving and stopped. This puts a lot of stress on the tranny, and as many people know stock trannys are known to fail (as mine did). Also the heavier tires kill your front brakes, eventually you will want to think about upgrading from stock.
The tradeoff from these problems is that the truck will look really cool with bigger MTR's.
As for the way the tires handle, I personally think they are excellent, but it must be remembered that they are mud tires. This means that they stick to anything that is dry (including pavement), but they barely slip when the road is wet.
Since the tires are bigger than stock (have larger sidewall) the ride will be a bit rougher than stock, but I found no rougher than my old Toyota with Rancho shocks on it. The truck turns great, you just need to remember to take it easy around corners, your center of gravity does change a little bit.
Lastly highway driving isnt that much fun with these tires just because once again they are mud tires they are very soft, this means that when you go fast they melt a little bit. If you don't mind the smell of burning rubber around your truck for a little while then this is not a problem.
Overall you shouldn't have much of a problem with the MTR's, I personally love them.

Well I don't want to deal with any tranny problems. I've got 98k on my truck. And I can't afford to have a major repair done.
The more I look at these tires, they just look like a more aggressive all-terrain tire. I would like to get the nitto terra grapplers but they only make one size in the 17's, and thats for the stock 265's.

Hey 97,
I have the 265's and they have been great. To be honest, I may go back with them. The 285's would look better to me, but I rarely ever need the extra height of the 285's. I have to tell you though, close to an all-terrain tire the mt/r is not. I go many places in 2wd that I used to slip and spin in 4wd. If you're going to be spending most of your time on the road get a good all-terrain tire. You'll get better mileage and a smoother, quieter ride. These tires have, in my opinion, really good road manners. You can always feel the lugs when going slow but they are pretty quiet. Now that mine have over 40,000 on them they are pretty loud. The weight of the mt/r's has had me thinking I will just stay with the 265's, too.
Good luck,Rich

Well 40k out of a set of tires for me is un-heard of. But with this truck i can't go nuts. So i think 265's are it. Just need to find a good price and someone to put them on.
