Question Tires for '98 16" rims

Anyone know the largest tire size you can fit on a '98 4X4 with 16" rims without lifts? I was told by a Ford engineer 33X10.5 16 would fit without rubbing, but this seems pretty large for a stock vehicle.

I have 275/70/16 which is 31" on a 4x2
and there is room to spare.
A 33" would fit on my truck if the front was lifted 2" or so.
I think 33s would fit.
PPL run 285/70/16 all the time (same as 33" I think) on 4x4s
