There are some options for tires in the stock and slightly larger. Chances are, there would be no sense in replacing the rims unless you don't like them.

What kind of tire do you want and what budget? All Terrain, Mud? $500 or 900 installed?

The top tires right now are the old faithful BFG TA AT KO which is availible in the stock 265/70 size, 285/70, and 315/70 sizes, all of which people have used on stock suspension/stock rims, although there is some work to make the 315 work. The other top AT tire is the Bridgestone Dueler AT Revo. Only availible in stock 265/70 size, but IMHO is a better tire and cheaper.

Take a look at www.tirerack.com for a lot of options, and a lot of reviews from other users.

Quagmeyer,

Have you worn out your stock Goodyears already? I never was a huge fan of goodyear tires but the AT/Ss on my 02 FX4 have 46K on them now and are holding up pretty well. I HAD to replace the stock Firestones on my last truck at 45K. If you're replacing yours just to go to a bigger size, let me know what you want for your stock tires.

just lookin for some traction

thanx apt, i'll check out the sight, i was just wanting something with more traction for alittle mudding purpose. but everyone told me that with the 17'' rim (which i do like) would hold some tires but are too thin, so i dont really know if i should get rid of the rim? see what im sayin? basically i want the biggest tire i can get on a 17" with a stock suspension. i dont wanna pay more than 200 a tire.

hey sidewinderfx4 my tires dont even have 2k miles on them. so if i get new tires we can work out a good deal for ya.

Quagmeyer,

You should be able to run 285 70 17s on your existing wheels. These tires are only 3/4" wider that the originals, but if you go with, say, a BFG mud terrain, you will have all of the "GO" you will need----I don't blame you for wanting to hold onto your stock FX4 wheels. I wish mine were another inch wider, but the EASE of cleaning them makes up for it.

Let me know when you get some new treads--see my profile for my e-mail address.

Sidewinder, what are you talking about ease of cleaning the FX4 rims? I hate my FX4 rims. I like the 5 spoke chrome better. The material does not let as much dust stick and the design is smoother and easier to clean.

quagmeyer,

Like I said, you can get up to 315/70R17 on the stock rims and suspension. I wouldn't worry about rim width a whole lot. The BFG AT in that size is really cheap, like $125 from Trerack vs. close to $200 for 285/70R17.

BTW, Here is my truck with 285/70R17 tires. Got the steps and Access Cover 20 hours after ownership and the tires came the day.

Hey Quagmeyer, sorry to jump in on your thread with an unrelated post, but I was hoping to catch APT.

APT, I saw the pictures of your truck. I have an 03 FX4 and yours seems to sit higher than mine. As a matter of fact, I think mine has dropped since I bought it. Is that possible or is it just me? Anyway, is there a way to raise my truck a little without adding any mods? By the way, great looking truck. Especially like the Access cover. I'll be getting one soon. Thanks.

You thread hijacker! j/k

I have done nothing to my ride height except the larger tires which would only raise it about half an inch.

One can crank the torsion bar in the front to raise and lower, but nothing can be done in the rear. Also, those pictures were taken with about 500 miles on it. Perhaps my suspension will settle some over time. How many miles on your truck?

Is it possible for the height to change? Sure, although one would think unlikely on such a new vehicle. Springs hold a vehicle up (or torsion bar in the front of many pickups) As they age, the stress wears them out and they cano no longer maintain the same rates.

Thanks for the info, APT. My truck has about 4K miles so maybe it did settle some.
Sorry again, Quagmeyer. I'll get off your thread now.

Hello quagmeyer,

Back to your post, here is my recommendation on the best mudders for your stock 17's.

Goodyear MTR - 285/70-17
BFGoodrich MT - 285/70-17
