Question How Big

I want to find out the largest tires i can stuff under my wells without lifting the truck. I have a '99 f-150 4X4 XLT with P265/70R17. So, I want some more aggressive looking tires and I also want to go wider than the ones i have now. Thanks in advance.

Welcome to F150online. You might consider trying a search for "largest tires" or similar phrase. This topic has been debated many, many times in both the distant and recent past. Tons of good info on the pros and cons of up-sizing. Here's a link to one last updated on 2/18/00: https://www.f150online.com/f150board...ML/000181.html

As for the answer to your question, it depends...

Do you really offroad, or is your truck for show? If you hit the trails, a 33" is about all you can stuff and not have any contact at full articulation. Some of the "show" trucks are able to run 34" or 35" without too many problems.

BIG TIRES CAN CAUSE BIG PROBLEMS!
Oversized tires can cause your VSS to send bad info to the computer.
I read through several threads and found that Jim814 had the same problem I had. He called it an "82mph CHUG". I was experiencing the same thing, disconnected the battery, resetting the computer, but the problem came back.
Well I called Mike Troyer at Superchip and described my(our) problem. He told me that my tire diameter was one inch larger that the standard equipment. When I was doing 80mph I was actually doing 87, etc. MORE IMPORTANTLY the larger tire was screwing with the VSS or Variable Speed Sensor. He suggested that I either go back to original equipment(my thought already) or he could configure a chip to straighten out the speedo misread or some similar techno solution.
So Jim814 if you are out there. The tires may be causing your problem. Once the VSS chip is no longer being confused you should return to normal. The speed limiter, according to Mike, is between 98 and 108, but usually closer to 98. ALSO the speed limiter is ABRUPT and shuts off fuel NOW. Mike says it is quite a rude and possibly an unsafe way to activate a speed limiter.
