99 F-150 with LT285 75R16s
I've got a 1999 F-150 4x4 Super cab SB with the 4.6 V8 and 3.55 limited slip rear
end. I put LT285 75R16 BFG All-terrains on. Most of my travel is short
trips around town with a lot of stop and go. I occasionally pull a boat
(about 3500 lb.) and about 5% of the time get off road. The tires look
great, but besides screwing up the odometer readings, I'm wondering how
much I have sacrificed in performance and economy as well as possible
transmission problems? (In complaining about sluggish acceleration to
the dealer, he advised going back to the stock tires, p255/70R16.) Any thoughts on this?
PS If and when a power programmer becomes available would it be worth
while to buy it and reprogram the on board computer?

tcox,
It's just the price you have to pay when going to larger tires. As for the Odo and Speedo, I tried to have mine calibrated but the dealer said that he could only adjust the PSOM (Programable Speedo Odo Module) down to 687 RPM (Revolutions Per Mile) from 694 RPM. With 285/75/16's the RPM sould be 630.
With your 285's and 3.55 rear end your effective gear ratio is aprox 3.28. I found this info on http://4lo.com. You could try changing gears (4.10's) to reverse the effects of the larger tires but that would probally have an adverse effect on your warranty.
As for me, I'm just going to live with the effective gears that the 285's gave me.
Hope this helped.
Ps. My city mpg is 11 and my hwy is about 15.

This is not a reply about speedo/odo, I want to know if you two have had your tires rotated and balanced yet? I have the 285/16 BFG AT's on mine as well (on American Eagel wheels), and just had this done after putting my first 7K on them. Now the wheel is shaking like a leaf, and Discount says they cant balance the wheels correctly because of the "new" bolt pattern the the F-150. Every time they put a wheel on the balance machine and zeroed it out, they could take it off and put it right back on and it would be off! Have you experiened this? Also, they say the wear on all of the tires is not right, they say its feathering on the entire face of the tire. Thanks for any input!

TonyisTruckin,
If your steering wheel is shaking like a leaf, than your front tires may be out of balance. I recently have a tape weight fall off the inside of my wheel. Take it back to the place you bought them from and have them rebalanced.
About not being able to balance because of a bolt pattern, thats not true. The wheel is attached to the machine where the spindle pops out (where the cap goes) not by the lugs. I am almost certain of that, someome will correct me if I'm wrong.
My wheels aren't perfectly balanced. I was told it's almost impossible to perfectly balance aftermarket wheels because we only want tape weights inside the wheel and not countered on the outside. Anyway, your steering wheel should not shake. The imperfection of the balance is almost totally un-noticeable. Tell the folks at Discount that they are all HUA!!! And tell them to balance the tires/wheels.
The above information is accurate and true to the best of my knowledge. I may be wrong, I have been before.

FordLover,
Sorry, no pictures yet. I'm not that computer literate, but have a digital camera at my disposal. I'll try to make it a priority.
Yes, I have noticed a decrease in mileage! I run aprox 250 miles to the tank (or aprox 21 gallons). Thats aprox 12 mpg. I know I sould figure in about +5% in total mileage that would make my mpg's. That's aprox 12.5 mpg's.
Oh well, the Tire/Wheel combo looks great!
I'll try to get the pictures in.

LOSER 1 you may want to recheck your mileeage again go to the interstate and when you come to the first milemarker (you know the little green sighns on the post thats got numbers on them ) when you come to the first one immediatally set your trip odometer when you come up on the next one your trip odometer will read 9 tenths if it is off like mine with this size tires? so for every ten mile you travel you are actually going 11 miles every 200 miles = 220 miles i did this with my 285/75/16 tires and i am getting 16.46 miles to the gallon on interstate but mine is a 4.6 V-8 and since i went to this size tire at 30.000 mile i now have almost 47.000 on truck now so i figure with mileage difference i should have about
1700 more miles on my truck then its showing?
so actually LOSER1 you say you get 250 miles
on 21 gallon you are actually getting 275 miles on 21 gallon providing it is off like mine? wich would be a little over 13 not much but every drop helps also when i am doing 55 i am actually doing 60

Remember these mileage calculations when buying a used truck with big tires. If the truck shows 80K, maybe it's really 100K?
How is this different from disabling the odometer for 20K miles? I for one would recalibrate immediately for honesty's sake and piece of mind. Then there is NO QUESTION how far you are driving.

F-Trucks,
Thanks!! I'll give it a try.
13 mpg is a dream of mine!
