Help with noise
I have a 2001 SCREW 4x4 with 45,000miles, and original Goodyears.
I have had a noise that I describe as a cyclical humming (like running an agressive mud tread) when in 4wd. It only occurrs when there is pressure on the driveline, like accelerating, and going up-hill. It is at its worst around 50-55mph. Three dealers have heard it, and declared it normal.
Now I'm getting a similar sound when in 2wd, although this one is constant, or not dependent on driveline pressure. The tires are evenly worn, and not yet near the wear indicators.
I'm concerned about looming major problems like U-joints, T-case, and even wheel bearings. I really like this truck, it has run well otherwise, and I have meticulously maintained it, but I'm at a point where I'm wondering if I should cut my losses and sell it.
Any input on these problems would be greatly appreciated.
BTW,

BTW,
What you are describing sounds like an out ouf round tire to me. Maybe try getting the tires rebalanced & rotated or experiment with changing tire pressure.
If you want to eliminate the tires as a possible culprit try replacing them temporarily with a set of tires from another truck that are known to be good.
If not the tires, then I would begin to suspect axle or hub bearings.
Good luck.

Thanks for the reply. Is a tire being out of round something that can develop late in the tire's life, or was it there all along, and is now getting worse / more noticeable.
BTW the noise gets louder when I corner.
