Too much brake pedal travel

It's about time for me to get this taken care of and I wanted to get some opinions from you guys. For the past year, I noticed my brake pedal is rather soft. When I press the brake pedal, I'll have to push it down about 3/4 to 1 inch before the brakes actually start working, and even then it doesn't stop as well as it used to. Also when I step on the gas and then immediately try to brake, the break pedal gets stiffer, but still doesn't stop that great. The break fluid level is fine. The pads and shoes are still good. Any ideas? Thanks in advance

Only thing I can think of is that it's a truck... I always felt my brake pedal was a little soft, but the dealer said it was normal. From what I've heard around here, too, it's pretty normal. I haven't had any problems (other than rotor and pad issues). If it really bothers you, you may want to upgrade the brake system, or go to a brake shop and ask them. Just don't spend a whole lot of money for nothing...

Good luck.
