Change to BFG 285/70R/17's

I saw a lot of the threads about upgrading tires from stock 265's to the 285's. I called the local tire shop, and he asked me if I was aware of any problems that may occur since the tire diameter is changing by more than 3% (barely). He indicated that the speed sensors for the antilock brakes are only tollerant to 3%.

Has anyone experienced any problems with your brakes and other electronic sensors or recieved a "Check Engine" light since putting on the 285's? Any possibilities of Warranty Problems that anyone can think of?

I just did this exact change about 10 days ago on a 2001 5.4 4x4 SuperCrew. About 4 day's ago I had to slam on the brakes pretty hard to avoid another car and my antilock brakes engaged. No check engine light problem either.

Slight correction: I went from 265/70/17 to 285/75/16 which is slightly different than the info you posted.

I made the switch a year ago and since have had my Chip re-programmed to compensate for the change. I did however drive for quite a while before I made the change and had no problems.

ABS sensors work by calculating the difference between any given wheel. If al lthe wheels change size, the ABS sensors don't know any better.

I got the 285/70R17 BFG AT TA KO just after buying my 03 a month ago and they are just fine. Ride a little rougher and take a bit of a hit on performance. If you plan to stick with the OEM size, I'd save some money and get the Bridgestone Dueler AT Revo.

Thanks APT. I did a little more research and took a look at the Duelers. I decided to go that way. I would rather have the larger tires, but the specs and reviews on the Duelers fit my need more. I don't get to do as much off roading as I used to, so I dont' really need anything too aggressive anyway. My needs are mostly road, snow, and rain so these will do just fine. The biggest factor is a almost a 40% price difference. I am getting them on tonight.

Thanks to everyone for their input.

I put the 285 BFG's on my 01 supercab about 4 months ago. Do you know if the dealer will reprogram my chip? Or are you talking a aftermarket chip? I have also gotten 3 speeding tickets since then...it seems my speedo is a little of, 5mph or so...

I contacted my local dealer and they stated they will not do that. I would recommend looking for a 4x4 shop in your local area first and see what they will charge you. Or you can purchase a programmer which is available in the F150Online Online Store, but be prepared to fork out over $300 minimum. You should be able to adjust your factory chip, but I would check into warranty considerations. Aftermarket Chips are already optimized by the manufacturer tweaking the Chip while the vehicle is on a dyno. (I have a friend that does it for Hypertech. What a great job!!!). You would still need to reprogram it for the new ratio.

If you have 17" wheels, then your speedo should be off about 3.15%. In that case, at 80MPH you are only 2.5MPH off. You can compute differences in your speed by dividing the larger diameter by the smaller, subtract 1, and multiply by 100 to get the percentage.

Check out the calculator at http://www.csgnetwork.com/tireinfo4calc.html.

Forgot to mention, finally got the new tires on last night. Also had the brakes and shocks replaced. I think I have a new truck. Unfortunately, I feel like I paid for one too. I guess I shouldn't complain though. Four years and 51k miles later, this is the first major expense that I have had besides oil changes and a radiator and transmission flush.

I am really impressed with the Revo's so far, even if I only drove the truck home. I may get some off-road time in the next month or so. I need to get the Beagles in the field and ready for fall.

I will try to get some pics out soon.

Thats wierd the local dealer in my area told me that they would try to do it, but did not know if it could be done, if not there would be no charge....I have been looking into a chip, along with an exaust, but have no clue on what needs to be done, if they are just a plug in or if they need some tweaking once installed....(something i would rather not do)....exaust wise i was leaning towards the borla single out cat back system.....

I went from 265/70's to 35X12.5 and did not have any problem other than the loss of performance which has been rectified by the 4.56's in the rear!!!!! As far as sites to calcualte how much your speedo is off this is a great onecalculator . My dealership said that they would try to do the recal but if they couldn't they would refer me to a place that can. I don't see how the size of tire we are talking about could have any real affect on a warrantee, now mine on the other hand yes and the fact that my gears are redone.
