stock wheels

I have a 01 XLT with 235/70/16 stock wheel size and a 4.6l . They look like toy tires. I'm going to up size but what size to go to is the question. I Know by going bigger i'm going to loose power. I also went to BFG web page and looked at there cart. they say 31X10.50 on stock truck no lift. does anyone have info that can help. thanks

Cooper

I to had 235 16's and went up to LT 265 16 cooper auroura's a great tire and installed at 380.00 dollars. Very little loss of power and they fill up the wheel well much better.

Very little change maybe 1-2 miles an hour difference. a mile marker test showed i went just over 9/10ths. so just a tad faster.

I had those tiny 235's also. Check my gallery to see what I went with.

if you crank your torsions you should be able to fit 33's without a problem and the power lose would not be that bad.

Hello flareside-sal,

The 265/75-16 is just about the same as a 31X10.50-16, you could go as big as a 285/75-16 on stock 4x4 with no problems, that size is about the same as a 33x11.5-16. Good luck.

265/75R16 is the largest recommended tire for the stock 16x7 wheels. Getting firmer LT tires will offer improved handling. If your upsize, your speedo will be off by 9%. Getting the computer reprogrammed to match the tires will correct the speedo and improve tranny shifting.

True that the recommended width may be 265 but you can fit as high as a 12.5" wide tire on a 7" rim. I know of a lot of guys who do it and have not problems and they off-road their trucks a lot and it don't get much more abusive to a truck than that. The manufacturer of the tire may not warrantee the tire but oh well. Aren't the 4X4 rims 7.5 anyway? I say go with 285 you will love them and it will give the tire a little more of a bulge and protect the rims better.
