Looking for a new setup

I have a 2000 F-150 4x2 4.2L Auto with 120K miles. I am looking to replace my tires, currently 235/70R16. I drive a HUGE amount of highway miles and no off-road. No heavy loads, maybe 300 pound periodically.

I do want taller tires (31 inch) but ride and wet/dry handling are important to me. I want to keep the factory 16x7 wheels.

I am thinking something like 265/75-16s. Possibly BFG Radial T/As. The reviews seem mixed on those. So let me know what your experience is.

Hello bniedert,

Since you have a 4.2 you might want to go with a 255/70-16, the BFG Long Trail T/A has had good reviews in a P255/70R16 (6 ply) and a more heavy duty LT255/70R16/D (8 ply). I know you can get a larger tire to fit but you want to keep as much power as possible. I had a 97 2wd with a 4.6 that came with the 235/70R16, I put 265/75-16 on with no size problems, but I did notice a little power loss. All below sizes will fit on stock rims.

(Size comparison on BFG Long Trail T/A)
235/70-16 => 29.1x9.5
255/70-16 => 31.1x10.2
265/75-16 => 31.7x10.5

I think I have decided

It looks like I will be going with the Kuhmo STX 275/70/16 , unless someone here gives me a good reason not to. Local Discount Tire store will get them on the truck for $430.

Anyone have experience with these things in the snow? Local dealer says no good, but Tirerack reviews look promising.

I realize the drop in power will be noticable but the vast majority of my driving is LD interstate stuff. Plus the truck goes to my kid next year and it needs to look "cool". A drop in power at that point will be desirable.
