ABS Brake Problem

The anti-lock brakes haven't worked in a long time on my '97 F-150.

The ABS light comes on when it's been parked outside on a hot summer day, but never at any other time. The rear wheels will lock up solid under heavy braking on slick surfaces. There's no indication that the anti-lock system is ever kicking in.

I hate to go to the dealership for this. Is there anything simple I should check out or replace before I take it in? I know this must have been discussed here before, but I've searched the forum archives and I haven't found a similar problem being discussed.

Thanks,

Greg
