I had a 97 F150 4X2 with Yokahama 285/70/16 AVS
on the stock wheels. The look to me was
The tires did bulge out over the wheels a bit, but I
had no rubbing at all from lock to lock.

On the downside the Yokahama's were not very good
in the wet, and worthless in the minor snow they were
exposed to.

I ran them to they were almost bald, stuck REAL good
to the dry stuff.....

I put 265/75-16's on my 97 2wd and they really filled up the wheel well, but never rubbed even when driving off road. In my humble opinion that's as big as I would go. There are a lot of different tires available in this size which is also good.

I'm in the market again for some replacement tires, and I think this time I'm only going to go max of 275/70/16. but since the 265/75/16 are more common and usually cheaper I've not ruled them out either...

I don't think you will go wrong with a larger tire unless you tow or carry heavy loads very often.

On the down side expect a decrease in fuel mileage, my current 255/70/16 give me just under 19 MPG I'm sure its going to fall to probably 16 after I replace them.

If I had the money I would like to swap the 16 inch rim to a 18, I saw a V6 SuperCab the other day with Lighting Polished Wheels
and looked real nice. but one can dream though...
