mud tire, wide or thin?

One of my buddies insists that a thin tire will "slice" through mud better than a wide tire. But my other buddies say a wide tire is better in slop. Any insight to this is appreciated.

It depends on the area. If you have a shallow firm base then you want a tall narrow tire that will cut through the top layer of slop and will grab the firm base. If you're in mud like I have here there isn't much of a bottom (least not in the top 10 ft) so you want something that is wider that will help to somewhat float you across it. It all depends on where you wheel.

Narrow = snow, wide = mud (usually, not always)
